What is Kenter Shackle Chain?
A Kenter Shackle plays a critical role in marine applications, especially for connecting anchor chains or joining two sections of anchor chain. It consists of two interlocking pieces, each featuring a round pin and a U-shaped body.
The pins are inserted through the chain links, and the U-shaped bodies are locked together to create a secure connection.
These shackles are typically made from high-strength steel and are designed to withstand the harsh marine conditions. They are an essential component of anchoring systems and find widespread use on ships, boats, and offshore structures

Technical Requirements for Kenter Shackle
The surface of the shackle must be smooth and free from any cracks, sharp edges, over-burning, or other defects.
The use of cast iron or cast steel shackles is strictly prohibited. Instead, the shackle body can be forged using killed steel, ensuring its strength and durability. Additionally, the shaft pin can be machined after bar forging, allowing for precise and accurate dimensions.
The shackles should not undergo any repairs involving drilling or welding, as this may compromise their integrity. Furthermore, it is important to note that the shackle body and shaft pin should not be repaired if they have been permanently deformed.
It is important to thoroughly inspect the shackle body and pin for signs of wear, deformation, and fatigue cracks before use. Neglecting to do so could result in serious consequences.
After the shaft pin has been correctly assembled, it is important to ensure that the width of the shackle body remains unchanged and that the thread connection is secure.
The prescribed safety load must not be exceeded when utilizing shackles.
How to Assemble a Kenter Shackle Chain?
Step 1: To properly secure the chain link, it is necessary to insert the first half of the kenter shackle, followed by the other half, and then drive the two parts together.
Step 2: To properly secure the kenter shackle, it is necessary to insert the center stud into its designated position.
Step 3: When the center chock is properly positioned, the taper pin can be inserted with or without the use of a hammer, as demonstrated in the accompanying illustration. The correct placement of the center chock can be determined by referring to the figure.
Step 4: To securely fasten the taper pin, employ a hammer to drive it in and then firmly secure it using the lead pellet.
Dismantling Kenter joining shackle
Step 1: To remove the taper pin, it is necessary to drive it out with a punch from its narrow end. This will displace the lead pellet that secures the pin, allowing it to be removed.
Step 2: The chock located at the center has been forcefully dislodged from its position.
Step 3: The shackle halves have been disengaged from each other.
