Introduction to Maritime Anchor Chains: Both domestic and international ships use anchor chains with high strength and large load-bearing capacity. The size of the anchor chain may be chosen smaller than the calculated size, depending on the ship’s load capacity, as specified by the Maritime Authority. However, most ships commonly use anchor chains with stops.
The anchor chain is divided into multiple segments and connected using links or shackles. The arrangement of these segments depends on the following:
- The first segment consists of the joining link and a necessary number of chain links.
- The middle segment is usually 25 to 27.5 meters long, chosen based on calculations. If the number of chain links selected from the calculated length is not even, the middle segment on the starboard side may be longer than the one on the port side.
- The end segment is made up of specialized links connecting to the last shackle of the maritime anchor chain.
Maritime anchor chains are indispensable for large-sized ships. For ships with a Normalized Cross-section Area (Nc) of less than or equal to 200, steel cables can be used as a replacement for anchor chains. The breaking force of the cable must not be less than the breaking force of the corresponding anchor chain. The total length of the cable must not be less than 1.5 times the length of the maritime anchor chain. The cable must have at least 144 strands and an organic core. The strands of the cable must be coated with a thin layer of zinc. The cable is connected to the anchor through a chain segment at least 10 meters long.
The anchor chain winch is an indispensable tool in the maritime industry. Baobap Vietnam provides consultation, design, and custom manufacturing services based on customer requirements.
Currently, in addition to conventional alloy steel anchor chains, there are also high-strength welded or cast chains, especially special high-strength welded chains. The size and structure of maritime anchor chains have been standardized. When choosing the standing length of anchor chains for each ship, an additional 3 links and one shackle should be reserved.
